State-based costs related to car, motorcycle accidents high

In the United States, there are over 30,000 people killed each year due to motor vehicle accidents. Because of this, work-related losses and medical costs have cost over $41 billion. Did you know that over half of all the costs are attributed to just 10 of the states? Fortunately, New Hampshire does not make the list, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't contribute.

New Hampshire's total cost is estimated at $143 million. Two million dollars of that is attributed to medical costs, while $141 million is directly related to work loss costs.

In New Hampshire, motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children, teens and young adults. That includes all people between the ages of 5 and 34. Additionally, these crashes are among the top reason for deaths for people of all ages, showing how dangerous it can be to be in an accident. Crashes are preventable, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds readers.

To reduce the costs associated with motor vehicle crashes, sobriety checkpoints, ignition interlock devices and graduated driver's license laws have been used. This helps reduce the number in inexperienced and dangerous drivers on the roadways.

Besides preventing accidents, reducing costs is done by making sure people aren't hurt when accidents do happen. Using proper child booster seat and safety restraints can help, and enforcing primary seat belt laws has shown good results. Using helmets when riding motorcycles has also been shown to reduce injuries and deaths.

To learn more about the costs associated with crashes or what you can do to seek compensation after you're injured in a crash, make sure you speak with someone familiar with your rights. Although accidents happen often, they are also often preventable, so there's no reason you need to suffer through this situation alone.
