A repetitive motion injury is one that is caused by performing the same action over and over again in repetition. For instance, imagine that you run every day for three hours a day. Your knees could suffer from the wear and tear of that same movement for many hours in a row if you’re not training properly. The same kind of thing can happen when you work at a job that requires repetitive movements.
A good example is a line in a factory. If each worker has a shift that lasts for eight hours and is expected to put 30 items on a hanger each minute, that results in 14,400 items ending up on hangers and 14,400 close-to-identical movements.
Humans aren’t built to withstand this kind of labor. These repetitive movements can end up causing permanent damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves in the body. If a person tries to push through the pain or injury, then it can be worsened and even lead to disability.
One of the most common types of repetitive motion injuries is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. This affects the hands and arm. It occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed thanks to swollen ligaments and tendons in the hands and wrist. Commonly, those who work on the computer or on a factory line suffer these injuries.
