Every day, there are around 1,000 people who suffer from dog bite injuries and require emergency care. These individuals may suffer from lacerations, deep puncture wounds, and infections from these bites.
Between 1982 and 2014, the United States and Canada collected information on the dog breeds that are most likely to cause injury. These breeds include rottweilers, presa canarios, sharpeis, boxers, dogo argentinos, mastiffs, cane corsos, and pit bulls along with their mixes. Approximately 86 percent of all attacks were caused by these breeds. On top of that, these dogs only make up around 9.2 percent of the total dog population, showing just how skewed the numbers really are.
Seventy-six percent of the attacks caused by dogs that resulted in fatalities were caused by this group of canines. Between January 2006 and December 2008, there were 88 fatal dog bites of which 59 percent were caused by pit bulls alone. These dogs have a bad reputation, but there is data to support it. For example, while only 18 percent of the above 88 attacks took place off the owner’s property, 81 percent of the attacks were caused by pit bulls.
If you’ve been attacked by a dog, you have every right to hold the owner responsible for his dog’s actions. While there are a few situations where the dog may not be at fault, like if you were hurting or taunting it, owners are held to strict liability and will be held accountable for attacks that take place.
