The first thing you need to do when it comes down to identifying workplace hazards is to conduct a workplace risk assessment. One or more employees should walk around the workplace looking for hazards. These can be tripping hazards, fall hazards, chemical hazards, fire hazards and more.
The next step is to determine how the employees at the workplace could face risk. Does an employee work near a fire hazard? Does an employee have a higher risk of falling because he or she works on a lift or scaffolding? Identify these risks and present them to a supervisor.
Now it’s time to evaluate all the risks that have been identified in the assessment. This should be done with the help of a supervisor or safety official. During the evaluation it’s a good idea to put plans in place for mitigating the hazards found or, if they cannot be removed, educating the staff on how to operate around them safely.
Record hazards found in your workplace on an annual basis or whenever an incident occurs involving a hazard.
