Tips for life after losing a spouse

When you got married, you said you would stay together until death parted you, but you never really thought about what that meant. Now that your spouse has passed away, you’re finding it hard to move forward with your life.

Here are a few tips that may help if you’re facing this tragic situation:

  • Consider cleaning out possessions that trigger hard memories. Often, it is the simple everyday items — like a pair of shoes or a hairbrush — that are hard to look at. Getting rid of them can help you move forward.
  • Take time when making big life choices. Maybe you are thinking of leaving New Hampshire to move closer to your hometown, for instance or just thinking about selling the house. You need to make these choices eventually, but do not be afraid to take time to grieve first.
  • Do not try to bury the way you feel. Grief is okay. Letting feelings surface and dealing with them helps you more than trying to refrain from showing your emotions. You don’t have to “tough it out.”
  • Find a new passion or hobby. You need something to fill your time. Otherwise, you spend too much time in your own head, thinking about everything. A new activity like hiking or joining a book club can give you something positive to work on. In some cases, that distraction is just what you need.
